Flight Information

Airfare is not included in the price of our South Africa group tour. When purchasing airfare please do so as follows:

Is This South Africa Tour Right for You?

  • There are four morning safaris on this South Africa group tour which means early morning starts (5am) on those days. The safaris start early as animals are most active at this time.
  • There is a good amount of travel on this trip (1 internal flight and 1 long drive) so be prepared to be on the move throughout this South Africa trip.
  • You will be staying in tented safari camps during your time in/around Kruger. While the tents are comfortable they are still tents in the wilderness and will certainly not have the same feel as a normal hotel room.
  • Summer in South Africa is from December through March while winter is from May through September. While Cape Town’s climate is somewhat temperate there is significant fluctuation in the climate in Kruger National Park. Summer in Kruger can be both very hot and humid while the winter is cold at night. Apply for dates according to your comfort level of travel during these times.

Frequently Asked Questions

The group leader on this South Africa group tour will be a local from Africa! His/her job is to ensure the safety and well being of everyone on the trip and to show everyone the most amazing time ever! While he/she will have a basic knowledge of the history, culture and customs of South Africa he/she may not be an expert in the matter.

A passport is required for this South Africa trip. It is strongly recommended that your passport have at least 6 months validity (from the time you leave South Africa) to avoid any problems. If you hold a U.S. passport you will not need a visa for entry to South Africa as long as you are not staying more than 90 days.

You will be staying in a combination of tented camps and boutique, independently owned 3 star hotels for the duration of this South Africa trip. In/around Kruger you will be staying in tented safari camps which can be considered “high end tents”. Please keep in mind that these are structured tents in the wilderness so, for example, insulation will not be as robust as a regular hotel and you will be surrounded by all living things in the South African bush including insects! In Johannesburg you will stay in very safe neighborhood in (3 star hotels) and in Cape Town you will stay in a centrally located (and safe) district like City Bowl (also in 3 star hotels).

In order to budget properly please consider the following items which are not included in this South Africa group travel trip:

  • Meals:  You are responsible for 5 lunches and 4 dinners. Budget around $250 for meals not included.
  • Tipping
    • Local drivers, guides and restaurant staff: Tipping is not compulsory but can make a big difference to individuals in the local hospitality industry in South Africa. Therefore, we recommend budgeting around $100 for these services.
    • Group leader: Tipping your group leader is completely discretionary. For outstanding service you may consider tipping your group leader ~$10/day.
  • Travel insurance: Travel insurance covering our minimum requirements ($100k+ in medical coverage including emergency evacuation) is compulsory for all participants. Budget anywhere from $50 to $130 for travel insurance (from a 3rd party) depending on your specific coverage inclusions.

The single room supplement on this South Africa group trip is $999. You will be able to select your preference for a single room supplement when filling out the application. However, due to the boutique nature of the tented safari camps a single room supplement is not guaranteed and subject to availability on a trip by trip basis. Therefore, if you are interested in a single room supplement please contact us before applying to inquire about availability.

Upon arrival in Johannesburg you will be picked up at the airport and taken directly to the hotel where your group leader will be waiting for you! After getting checked-in you will have free time until around 6pm upon which you will meet the group in the lobby of the hotel for an orientation meeting followed by a welcome dinner nearby. While you will not physically meet your group mates until the evening of the first day you will be in contact with everyone well ahead of time in the group WhatsApp chat and, in addition, we will provide you with everyone’s traveler bios so you’ll already know each other a little before physically meeting!

On days 3 (Kruger) and 9 (Cape Town) you will have the opportunity to tailor the trip to your style by selecting an optional excursion. You will be able to select the optional excursion during the application process.

Day 3 (Kruger):

  • Bush walk: ZAR1100

Day 9 (Cape Town)

  • Township tour: ZAR700
  • Food tour: ZAR1990

You can read more about the optional excursions here.

We recommend bringing cash for this trip. We recommend bringing USD (cash) and then exchanging to rand when you arrive in South Africa. Further, if you have a credit card without foreign transaction fees (Visa and Mastercard) bring that tool as most stores will accept it. You will be provided with further currency instructions including how to exchange USD for ZAR if you join this South Africa group tour.

You may bring any size luggage that you wish. You will be provided with a detailed packing list after joining the South Africa trip!

You will have WiFi at the hotels in Johannesburg and Cape Town. In Kruger, you might have WiFi (in the safari tented camp) but expect the signal to be weak and sporadic at best (if existent).

Our South Africa group trip covers 3 different locations so it’s important to understand the nightlife in each location.  However, please note that the days are very long and typically this is not a nightlife oriented trip.  The decision to go out at night or not is completely up to you!

  • Johannesburg:  While you will be staying in a safe neighborhood we recommend calling it an early night in Johannesburg as you have very early mornings for the next several days to come.
  • Kruger National Park:  At night you will be confined to the boma so these nights will be very relaxing.
  • Cape Town:  Cape Town has a sleuth of nightlife options ranging from pubs, to lounges and clubs. The decision to go out at night in Cape Town is entirely up to you!

On nights 2, 3 and 4 you will be staying in tented safari camps. The ‘rooms’ are set up under tents – think a large tent with a modern feel underneath (beds, linens, wash basin, mosquito netting, etc.). All the tents will have two separate twin beds. Some safari camps might even have A/C units in the tents themselves but this is not a guarantee. The safari camps will have outdoor shower facilities. It’s important to keep in mind these safari camp sites are not built like hotels but, rather, a glamping like experience. The camp sites we use are considered middle range (as far as tented camp sites go).
