Airfare is not included in the base price quoted. We recommend landing by 2pm on the first day (flying into Keflavik; airport code: KEF) but you’re welcomed to depart anytime on the last day (again from Keflavik; airport code: KEF). If you are doing the Blue Lagoon excursion you must land by 8am on the first day.
Looking for another trip to Iceland? We also offer the following Iceland group trips:
This 6 day summer Iceland trip runs together with our 5 day summer Iceland trip. The difference between the two trips is the Glymur waterfall hike, which is only available on the 6 day trip. Some participants will stay for 5 days while others will stay for the (extra) 6th day.
The group leader on this Iceland group trip will be either one of our U.S. or local Icelandic based group leaders. His/her job is to ensure the safety and well being of everyone on the trip and, of course, to show everyone the most amazing time ever! While he/she will have a basic knowledge of the history, culture and customs of Iceland he/she may not be an expert in the matter.
A passport is required for this Iceland group trip. While your passport must have at least 3 months validity from the time you leave Iceland it is strongly recommended that your passport have at least 6 months validity to avoid any problems. If you hold a U.S. passport you will not need a visa for entry to Iceland as long as you are not staying more than 90 days (during a 180 day period starting from the day of first entry). Please note that Iceland is a member of the Schengen area and, therefore, the 90/180 rule applies if you’ve visited other Schengen countries, too.
You will stay in guesthouses for the duration of this Iceland group trip. You can think of a guesthouse as a B&B – old family homes that have been converted into B&B style lodgings. All the guesthouses are clean, safe, and in excellent locations. The guesthouse in Reykjavik is directly in the center of the city – just a couple minute walk from the famous Hallgrímskirkja Church. The guesthouses in the countryside (nights 2 through 4) are in strategic locations to minimize the driving time between sites which maximizes the time you will spend outside in nature. Please note that many guesthouses in Iceland have shared bathroom facilities and, when compared to equivalent U.S. hotel rooms of the same rankings, the rooms can considered small.
In order to budget properly please consider the following items which are not included in this Iceland trip:
The single room supplement on this Iceland group trip is $499. You will be able to select your preference for a single room supplement when filling out the application. If you are applying for this trip within 3 months of the departure please contact us for single room availability before applying.
If you are opting in to the Blue Lagoon excursion you will meet your group leader (and other Blue Lagoon participants) at the airport on the morning of the first day.
If you are not opting in to the Blue Lagoon excursion you will take the bus directly to the guesthouse (after landing in Keflavik airport) where you will check-in to the guesthouse and then have free time until around 6pm upon which you will meet the group in the guesthouse lobby.
While you will not physically meet your group mates until arrival in Iceland you will be in contact with everyone well ahead of time in the group WhatsApp chat and, in addition, we will provide you with everyone’s traveler bios so you’ll already know each other a little before physically meeting!
On day 1 and day 3 you will have the opportunity to tailor the trip to your style by selecting optional excursions. You will be able to select the optional excursions during the application process and, after, you’ll be sent an invoice to pay.
Day 1:
Day 3:
You can read more about the optional excursions here.
If you have a credit card (Visa or Mastercard) without foreign transaction fees just bring that as it will be accepted everywhere and there will be no need to bring or use cash. American Express cards are accepted at the majority of places but you might run into a few smaller vendors in Iceland that do not accept AMEX. If you do not have a credit card without foreign transaction fees you will need to obtain Icelandic Krona (symbol: ISK) for this trip.
You may bring any size luggage that you wish though we strongly recommend a carry-on size bag. Please keep in mind that you will be staying in 3 different guest houses during the trip. Further, please note that there are only 2 possible ‘going out’ nights (while the other nights you’ll be in the countryside) so packing lite is very doable.
Yes, you will have WiFi access at all the guesthouses and restaurants.
On the first and last night you will be staying in Reykjavik which has a fun, vibrant nightlife with a range of options from clubs to lounges to dive bars. On the other nights you will be staying in the Icelandic countryside where there is no nightlife at all; we recommend bringing fun games to play with fellow group mates on these nights in the guesthouses! The decision to go out or not (in Reykjavik) is completely up to you.
If you are opting in to the Blue Lagoon excursion you will be picked up at the airport in the morning on your first day and, after the Blue Lagoon, you will be dropped off at the guesthouse.
If you are not opting in to the Blue Lagoon excursion we recommend taking the FlyBus to the guesthouse which drops you off within a 5 minute walk (of the guesthouse). The FlyBus ticket does not need to be booked in advance; you can purchase a ticket upon arrival at the airport (in Keflavik).
The drive to Landmannalaugar (day 4) is on an unpaved, gravel road with many turns. Therefore, if you get carsick easily this might not be the best trip for you. However, if you only get mildly carsick we recommend consulting with your doctor to discuss possible carsick remedies such as medication or patches.
Days 2 and 3 (without the glacier hike) are not very physically demanding as it’s mostly sightseeing with easy walks around those sites. The optional glacier hike (on day 3) adds a bit of physical intensity. However, days 4 and 5 contain a 4 to 6 hour hike (on each day) which are technically difficult with drop offs and steep inclines at times. We operate the hikes in the safest way possible without any rushing. If you do not workout regularly it is encouraged to do some physical training prior to this trip.
You will need proper hiking gear (clothes), hiking shoes, and a light hiking day backpack for this Iceland group trip. Layers are key! We will provide you with a detailed list of everything you need to bring once you join the trip which is very similar to the one featured in this Iceland packing list article.
• Welcome to Reykjavik, the charming capital of Iceland filled with colorful houses, quaint streets, and European inspired cafes. Today is a free day: arrive early and explore the charming downtown of Reykjavik or you could opt for an active day by going ATVing, horse back riding or visit a lava cave. If you’re interested in an excursion today we’ll be happy to assist you!
• Tonight, we’ll head out to a local Icelandic restaurant for a welcoming dinner as we get to know each other. Perhaps we’ll run into “The Mountain” from Game of Thrones – fingers crossed!
Daily Inclusions:
• Lodging: Guesthouse in Reykjavik (double occupancy)
Optional Activities:
• Blue Lagoon (17.500 ISK): This add on includes i) transportation from KEF airport to the Blue Lagoon, ii) Blue Lagoon entrance fee (comfort pass), and iii) transportation from the Blue Lagoon to our guesthouse in Reykjavik. Note: your flight must be scheduled to land in KEF by 8am today to be eligible for this add-on.
• Today we embark on an amazing journey by way of the famous ‘Golden Circle’ where we’ll see so many unique and interesting sites in one day you’ll be amazed this was even possible. Our day starts by getting picked up in Reykjavik then head to Thingvellir National Park for our first stop. Thingvellir, home to iceland’s first parliament in 930 AD, is located where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are splitting, causing massive fissures deep in the ground. After some serious photo ops (and potentially Icelandic horse petting) we’ll get back in the bus and drive to our next stop: Geysers at Haukadalur. This geothermal area is home to two famous geysers: strokkur and geysir (“geyser” was named after this one). After catching an eruption from the strokkur geyser (it erupts every 10 minutes with 100 foot high scalding water blasts) we’ll head to the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall. If you haven’t been impressed up to this point you surely will now: the mighty Hvita river abruptly falls 100 feet into a ravine causing the formation of the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall. Fill up whatever memory is left on your camera with additional pictures before we head to our guesthouse in Selfoss.
• Phew, what a day! You saw some stunning sites today so relax tonight in a typical Icelandic bar while reminiscing over the land of fire and ice.
Daily Inclusions:
• Lodging: Guesthouse near Selfoss (double occupancy)
• Meals: Breakfast
• Activities: Golden Circle tour
• Transportation: Private transportation all day
Optional Activities:
• Secret Lagoon (2.500 ISK): entrance fee to bathe in the Lagoon
• We start our day bright and early to capture the most of Iceland’s gorgeous Southern coast! We’ll jump into our car for an off-road tour along the southern coast: we’ll visit the beautiful volcanic ash beach, the Skogafoss waterfall, sea stacks of Reynsidranger, and the stunning Seljalandsfoss where you’ll be able to walk behind the waterfall! Bonus points if you spot a puffin or sea lion! Want to make your day even more eventful? Then opt in for the optional glacier hike for an added adrenaline rush!
• Tonight we’ll relax in our guesthouse and reminisce about the absolutely amazing day!
Daily Inclusions:
• Lodging: Guesthouse near Selfoss (double occupancy)
• Meals: Breakfast
• Activities: South Coast tour
• Transportation: Private transportation all day
Optional Activities:
• Glacier Hike (17.500 ISK)
• Today you are in for a true treat as you will hike in one of the most unreal places in the world – Landmannalaugar. We’ll start our day early as we drive to the Highlands of Iceland for a hike that’s both challenging and stunning. Upon arriving to the Fjallabak Nature Reserve we’ll gear up and head off for our hike. Our hike will take us through lava fields, gorgeous flora and fauna, unreal views of “painted mountains” and, finally, a hike up an actual volcano (yikes). No worries, though, as it’s completely safe! And, finally, what better way to end your hiking day than jumping into a natural hot spring! A natural hot spring that happens to be right by where we parked – just saying! Note: the hike is about 6 miles and rated medium strenuous with some high drop offs.
• After we’ll head back to Reykjavik then dinner out for those that wish.
Daily Inclusions:
• Lodging: Guesthouse in Reykjavik (double occupancy)
• Meals: Breakfast
• Activities: Landmannalaugar hike
• Transportation: Private transportation all day
Note:
• For departures in May, June and September: The road to Landmannalaugar might not be opened during this time in which case an alternative hike (to a hot spring) will supplant the Landmannalaugar hike.
• Today we’ll strap on our hiking shoes as we embark on a gorgeous hike through the beautiful, pristine countryside in Iceland. We’ll jump into our car and head North for about 1 hour where we’ll then get out, gear up, and start upon our day’s hike. While the hike will be challenging as we pass by mountains, streams, rivers, moss covered lava fields, and even a cave, your efforts will be rewarded by the final site: the unreal Glymur waterfall. This waterfall, at about 650 feet high and claiming Iceland’s second highest waterfall title, drops into a moss covered canyon where you’ll truly be able to appreciate what the “land of fire and ice” is all about. We’ll relax for a bit by the waterfall before heading back to our car and then to Reykjavik for lunch. Note: this hike is around 5 miles round trip and rated medium strenuous.
• After we’ll head back to Reykjavik where you’ll have some time to further explore Reykjavik by visiting one of its cool museums or even a public pool (which are very nice).
• Tonight we’ll meet back at the guest house and head out for our farewell dinner together. Sigh.
Daily Inclusions:
• Lodging: Guesthouse in Reykjavik (double occupancy)
• Meals: Breakfast
• Activities: Nature Waterfall Hike
• Transportation: Private transportation to/from Glymur
• Meals: Breakfast
